Frequently asked questions

General

What types of bundles can I create?

Standardise supports four bundle types:

  • Bundle of Documents – a standard document bundle (e.g. Bundle of Cause Papers, Agreed Bundle) with an optional Date column in the index.
  • Bundle of Authorities – a bundle of legal authorities, with an optional Relevance field under each authority in the index (no Date column).
  • Record of Appeal – an appeal record organised into defined volumes (Volume I to V), with per-volume indexes and pagination that restarts for each volume. A Supplemental Record of Appeal mode is also available.
  • Core Bundle – a locked two-volume structure with an appellant / respondent / second-party subtype that drives the cover title (e.g. “Appellant’s Core Bundle Volume 1”).

You can generate a Bundle of Documents and a Bundle of Authorities together in a single run. Record of Appeal and Core Bundle are generated on their own.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Standardise runs entirely in your browser. There is no plugin, add-in, or desktop software to install.

Accounts & billing

Do I need an account?

Yes. An active subscription (or free trial) is required to use Standardise.

What plans are available?
The plans and their details.
How is my usage counted?

Usage is metered by the number of pages you upload each month. Your cover page and any reference Word document do not count towards your allowance.

Importantly, you are only charged usage when a bundle is successfully generated – if a generation fails, no pages are deducted.

How do I upgrade, downgrade, or cancel my subscription?

Click Manage plan in the top bar. This opens a secure self-service billing portal where you can change plans, update your payment details, view invoices, or cancel. If you cancel, your access continues until the end of the period you’ve already paid for.

Uploading documents

What file formats are accepted?
  • Cover page and Reference document: Word format (.docx).
  • All other Documents and Authorities: PDF format (.pdf).
Are there upload limits?

Yes, as safety guardrails: up to 1 GB per file, 5 GB per request, and 1,000 files per bundle. These limits are more than sufficient for most bundle use cases.

Can I upload two files with the same filename?

Yes. If two different files share a name (e.g. two files both called Letter.pdf), Standardise automatically distinguishes them behind the scenes – both will appear in your bundle correctly.

How do I reorder documents?

Drag and drop documents to reorder them. You can also select multiple documents to reorder or delete several documents at once.

Cover pages

How does the cover page work?

Upload a Word cover page. If you upload a Word cover containing the placeholder {Description}, Standardise replaces it with the bundle title – e.g. “Bundle of Documents” or “Record of Appeal Volume I”.

Writing the placeholder as {DESCRIPTION} produces the title in capitals; {description} produces lowercase.

If you generate bundles with multiple volumes, Standardise automatically adds the volume number to your bundle title – e.g. “Bundle of Documents (Volume 2)”.

Can I customise the cover title?

Yes. In the Cover Page Title settings you can choose Standard mode (the default bundle title, optionally with a party prefix such as “Claimant’s”) or Custom mode (type your own title, which replaces the entire standard title).

A live preview shows exactly how your title will look on your cover page.

Index and tabs

What appears in the index?

Each document’s tab number, description, and page range. You may also insert an optional Date column which you may toggle on and off.

For Bundles of Authorities, you may also insert an optional Relevance note under each entry which you may also toggle on and off.

How can I organise my documents?

You may use Divider Rows or Document Groups to organise your documents.

  • Divider rows are section headings you insert between documents – e.g. “Case Law”, “Legislation”, “Correspondence”. They appear in the index as bold full-width headings.
  • Groups let several related documents share a single tab number, with a sub-label for each document, e.g. Tab 3(a), Tab 3(b), Tab 3(c). The group’s heading (e.g. “Annexes”) appears as a bold row in the index, with each document listed underneath with sub-labels.
Can I change the index font?

Yes. You may customise the font and font size under Index Settings. We currently have nine fonts to select from.

Do I also get an editable Word version of the index?

Yes. Every generated bundle comes with a separate folder with all indexes in Word format in case you need to make any edits.

How are documents labelled in the bundles?

Every document is preceded by a numbered divider page. By default, documents are labelled as “Tabs” – e.g. Tab 1, Tab 2, Tab 3. However, you may edit how each document is labelled under Document Label settings.

References & citations

What is the reference document feature?

If you have a Word document (e.g. submissions or memorials) that cites documents in your bundle, Standardise can replace Tags inserted in that document with full bundle references automatically.

Give each bundle document a Tag (e.g. ABC), then insert that Tag in curly braces where you want the bundle references to be. If you wish to cite a particular page within that document, append a page number in the Tag.

You writeStandardise outputs
{ABC}Bundle of Documents Vol 1, Tab 3
{ABC, p 12}Bundle of Documents Vol 1, Tab 3, p 45
{ABC, pp 12-15}Bundle of Documents Vol 1, Tab 3, pp 45-48

Page numbers you write refer to PDF pages within the document referred to. Standardise converts them to the document’s actual page numbers in the generated bundle.

Variants like p. 7, p 7-12, and pp 4-14 are all accepted. Note that Tags must be unique and documents cannot share the same Tag.

What if a Tag reference is wrong?

Invalid Tag references are flagged in-place in the output document as [INVALID]. Invalid references may occur where a Tag has not been assigned to any document or the page range cited in a Tag is outside the page range of that document.

Search the returned document for “INVALID” to review any invalid references.

AI Autofill and OCR

What does AI Autofill do?

The AI Autofill button reads your uploaded PDFs and automatically fills in each document’s description and date.

If you’ve enabled the relevance field for a Bundle of Authorities, AI Autofill also fills in the relevance for you.

If you’ve selected the document referencing feature, Standardise also reviews your reference document and fills in the tags you have cited.

AI can make mistakes. Please check the autofilled details before generating your bundle.

What is Optical Character Recognition?

If your bundle contains scanned documents, enable Optical Character Recognition in Settings. Standardise detects which pages are scans and adds readable text to them. Pages that already contain text are left alone.

Page numbering

How does page numbering work?

Page numbers are stamped in the top right corner of every page by default.

You may customise page number settings including:

  • No page numbers – disable numbering entirely.
  • Bold page numbers – bold all page numbers.
  • Prefix / suffix – add any prefix or suffix to your page numbers – e.g. the prefix “BOD-” produces page numbers “BOD-1”, “BOD-2” etc.
  • Collision Avoidance – detects existing text or content near where the page number will be placed and automatically shifts the page number to avoid overlapping with existing text or content.
  • Sequential page numbers – page numbering continues across volumes instead of restarting at 1 at the start of every volume.
  • Page number position – you may select the location of your page numbers from top right, top middle or top left.

Volumes & splitting

How are bundles split into volumes?

You can set a maximum number of pages each volume can contain.

Then choose from different split modes:

  • Default – this mode tries to reduce splitting documents across volumes whilst ensuring that each volume is at least 70% of the maximum volume size.
  • Exact – volumes are filled to exactly the maximum page count.
  • No Split – documents are never split across volumes unless a single document exceeds the maximum page limit on its own.
How do Record of Appeal volumes work?

You upload documents into the predefined ROA volumes (Volume I, II, III, IV and V).

Documents always stay in the volume you assign them to. If the documents within a volume exceed the maximum page limit, it is split into parts – “Volume I Part 1”, “Volume I Part 2” etc.

What are the Volume IV exhibit columns?

For a Record of Appeal, “Volume IV” offers an optional tick-box that adds two extra index columns – Exhibit Marking and Whether or not included in records depending on your needs.

Privacy & security

What happens to my documents?

Uploaded documents are processed in a secure and encrypted environment. Your documents and bundles are deleted shortly after your bundle is downloaded.

Standardise does not permanently retain your documents or bundles generated.

Is my data used to train AI models?

No. Your data is never used to train any AI models by us or our AI providers.

Can I export or delete my account data?

Yes. In the account settings menu (the “⋯” button in the top bar), Download my data exports your profile and usage history, and Delete account permanently deletes your account (cancelling any active subscription immediately).

Because documents are not retained permanently, there is no document data to export.
